Rob Wagner's World of Sight and Sound

Over the past few years I have been writing occasional articles for Interlude, the journal of the Australian Band & Orchestra Directors Association (ABODA). The goal of these Performance Guides is to take interesting, educationally useful repertoire and pull them apart, endeavouring to understand the composer's intent within each work, and to offer practical hints for making rehearsals more successful and by identifying traps that can obstruct exciting performance.

Performance Guides are exactly that - simply GUIDES to help conductors grapple with a new work. They are not meant to be taken as 'Gospel', or as the only way to approach the repertoire at hand. Far from it! If nothing else, it is hoped that these articles will encourage conductors to find their own voices in realising these performances.

The repertoire chosen for the guides range from Grade 1 to Grade 4 level. I don't select just what is considered to be 'standard repertoire' by some. Rather, these are works that I have personally found to be both musically satisfying and educationally significant in the school environment. I will add further articles to this list in the future, so check back occasionally to see what's new.

And, if you'd like to discuss or comment on any of these, or just let me know if you find the guides useful, email me at
